C'est la vie (That's Life)

The simplicity of Lucy Gunning's scenarios is disconcerting. The titles she chooses usually give a precise description of what is shown. In Climbing around my room, we see a girl in a red dress climbing the length of the artist's room. A single action, a single place, a single character. The camera follows her movements smoothly, naturally. We find the same economy of means in The Horse Impressionists: this time, she observes with the camera five women who are imitating the calls and movements of horses.

In both cases, we identify immediately with the artist's point of view. We become, in spite of ourselves, "voyeurs" observing these nameless characters. It is precisely this which forces us to look for other possible connotations to these images in order to reach a richer analysis.
